The dreaded Christmas 'do'

Well, done three so far in the last 10 days and just one more to go - which is my wifes. Too much alcohol in too short a space of time in too noisy a place. What is the point exactly? Seems like fun at the start but wanes pretty quickly as the evening progresses.
